Bronte's passage highlights Mrs. Reed's disdain towards Jane. Unfortunately, Mrs. Reed uses her social class to justify being above Jane and to keep Jane in "her place." Bronte uses Reed's character to send a romantic theme about society: those in upper social classes manipulate those beneath them in order to stay in power.
